For a quarter of a century Bungay challenged its best and brightest with the Brains of Bungay Quiz. Sadly this is now set to end
The first Brains of Bungay took place in 1991. Originally the intention was to create a one-off, something to raise money for the local Girl Guides in order to raise funds for an equipment hut. However people enjoyed competing for the title and it started to become a regular fixture on the calendar.
Over time the quiz has supported a number of charities, raising money for Holy Trinity Church while runners up have been able to nominate charities to donate to.
Unfortunately fewer people have attended the Friday night events and the organisers have decided to stop, going out with a bang rather than a whimper as quizmaster Terry Reeve explains “We’ve had a heck of a lot of fun and nobody takes it too seriously. Part of the idea was to bridge the gap between winter and spring…It is the end of an era but the numbers are gradually diminishing.”
Over the years the quiz has been organised by volunteers, handling every aspect from time keeping, organising the buzzer system and providing the refreshments at the interval. Quizmaster Terry also used his connections at Archant to provide a trophy every year (The team also chip in money into the pot for every time the quiz master goofs!)
While Terry understandably reflects on the passing of the quiz he is also quietly optimistic that an equivalent event will occur in the future “We never dreamt it would be going this long and we will miss it. But maybe if we’ve had a bit of a break someone else might want to have a go at running it. Who knows?”
