After the sheepskin specialists Nursery and Son of Bungay closed down there were fears this would lead to the end of this particular line of clothing specialists in the local area. Fortunately this is no longer the case with a new business in the local area
A former employee of Nursery and Son has joined forces with two Bungay women to create Fleece and Hide, a new business specialising in sheepskin and leather clothing. Sally Gagen is one of the founders of this business and she believes that the skills needed to make this type of clothing should not die out, although she confesses that for independent British retailers this can be a challenge “Sourcing raw materials isn’t easy but we’ve done our homework and established good relationships with suppliers.”
Fellow director Hilary Mason agrees that keeping businesses like this in the local area is essential ““With Nursey’s closing, we just felt so strongly that the skills, knowledge and experience of this specialist form of manufacturing deserved the kiss of life.”
Whether or not Fleece and Hide will survive in the current economic climate remains to be seen. But what is certain is that the commitment is there and hopefully the determination of these innovative entrepreneurs will be rewarded with support by customers in the local area and beyond.
